Free Travel Advice Gets Darlington Residents on Track to a Healthier Future
RESIDENTS of Darlington will benefit from free personal travel planning conversations to help get to work, education or training.
(9th February 2017) Local Motion’s Travel Advisors have arrived in Darlington on the final stop of the 2016/17 tour of the Tees Valley. While they are here throughout February and March they will talk with residents and aim to help make travelling around the region cheaper, easier and healthier for individuals and for families. They will also note any comments residents may have which could help make improvements to sustainable transport options in the area.
Travel Advisors will call at around 3,500 households close to Darlington station highlighting in particular the benefits of using the train for daily journeys by offering timetables, maps and discounted fare information.
Choosing to travel by rail could save you time and money. Did you know it takes just 26 minutes to travel from Darlington to Middlesbrough by train and costs just £6.00 for a return ticket? Or if you buy a weekly ticket it works out at just £3.40 per day?
The Travel Advisors will also be encouraging residents to consider other sustainable transport by offering bus timetables and maps along with walking and cycling information. Travelling on foot or by bike regularly has been shown to reduce the risk of chronic illnesses, such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, asthma, stroke and some cancers so the travel advice will deliver health benefits along with environmental and money saving benefits.
The residential programme will be supported with drop-in events for jobseekers at job centres and recruitment events across Darlington between February and March.
The Travel Advisors will carry personal identification and be easy to recognise from their red Local Motion branded clothing.

Councillor Nick Wallis, Darlington Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Leisure and the Local Environment commented:
"This is the fifth year that free travel advice has been available to the residents of Darlington. Each year a different area of Darlington has been targeted to ensure that all residents can benefit and this year the advisors will be visiting the area around Darlington station. If you are visited by one of the travel advisors I encourage you to take full advantage of this opportunity to get travel advice which is tailored to you. Whether you travel for work, education or leisure you can find out how making small changes in how you travel could make a big difference, help save money and improve your health, all in all helping to raise the level of health and wellbeing of the residents of our town."
The Darlington Personalised Travel Planning project (PTP) is part of a wider PTP project covering the five Tees Valley local authorities with Darlington being the final stop on the 2016/17 tour. PTP makes up a large part of the work of the Tees Valley’s Sustainable Transport Transition Year Fund Bid which is funded by the Department for Transport.
