Joanne Carey cycles to work

Joanne

Tell us about your commute.  How’s it going?

It’s about two and a half miles and it takes about 20 minutes in the morning and 25 going home because it’s uphill. By car it takes 20 minutes so it takes about the same time. I’ll have a shower when I get home at the end of the day though, because it’s harder work going uphill!

How do you feel when you arrive at work on your bike?

I feel great! Before, my general routine was drive to work, drive home, cook the tea, wash the pots and do nothing. So now of course I’m saving on petrol, I’m moving more, it’s greener, I’ve done my exercise - obviously the endorphins kick in, you feel energised, you feel so much better for it. And that’s just two days a week!

What made you want to cycle to work in the first place and what do you get out of it?

I’ve always enjoyed going on a push bike and I bought one through the cycle to work scheme two years ago.  But last year I had some health issues so I was out of action for a few months.  I came back to work in October but I wasn’t really strong enough to do anything like this until recently.

Plus I had my post-50 health check at the doctor’s and they talk about cholesterol, diabetes, heart disease, strokes… and all of a sudden you’re thinking, I’m of an age now where these things are possible.

It’s definitely improved my self-esteem, I’m sleeping better and I’m happier.

Did you need to buy any specialist equipment to get started?

I had the helmet, the bike, the panniers and some lights, but I just wear normal clothes – absolutely no Lycra!

Is there anything you’d like to say to someone who was thinking about cycling to work?

Just try it and if you enjoy it, that’s great and you’ll want to do it again.  If you don’t try it, you’ll never know.   You can’t buy that feeling of getting yourself to work under your own steam, instead of just sitting in the car.  It’s made me feel good.
